The Iceberg Lettuce Parasite Outbreak: What You Need to Know
A terrifying foodborne illness outbreak recently swept across multiple U.S. states, leaving thousands of people severely sick.
The culprit? A microscopic parasite known as Cyclospora, which was traced back to contaminated iceberg lettuce.
Over 16,000 Infected Across the Country. According to federal health officials, the outbreak ballooned into the largest of its kind in U.S. history, infecting more than 16,000 people across at least 20 states.
A thorough investigation initially pointed to shredded lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms from its facilities in Mexico.
The contaminated greens made their way into popular everyday establishments, causing customers to fall ill after eating food from major retailers like Walmart and fast-food chains like Taco Bell.
Severe Symptoms and Lasting Illness. Unlike standard stomach bugs that clear up in a couple of days, cyclosporiasis causes a grueling gastrointestinal infection.
Victims reported suffering from intense stomach cramps, severe vomiting, and watery, explosive diarrhea that lasted anywhere from two to three weeks.
While effective antibiotics are fortunately available to treat the infection, thank god!
The severity of the outbreak still resulted in two reported deaths.
A History of Recurrence. Alarmingly, this is not the first time Taylor Farms has been linked to a major health scare.
The company was also at the center of a notorious 2013 Cyclospora outbreak.
Because Taylor Farms operates internationally, the reach of their contaminated produce may stretch beyond North America—there have even been unconfirmed reports of related cases as far away as Germany.
Miscommunication and Ongoing Investigations. The handling of the crisis by American authorities also drew criticism. Government officials mistakenly assured the public that the parasite outbreak was entirely under control by July 21st. However, real containment was not actually achieved until the beginning of August.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has since officially declared the summer outbreak over, bringing much-needed relief to consumers.
Nevertheless, investigating bureaus continue to look into the situation to ensure a breakdown in food safety of this magnitude never happens again.
