Dell XPS 13 (2019): A Detailed Review

The Dell XPS 13 offers a new color, a powerful Intel Whiskey Lake Processor and a 4 K display – all in a lightweight chassis.

Dell has just built one of the best laptops. The XPS 13 (starting at $899 and updated at $2.449) is fitted with Intel’s strong 8th gene core processor much faster and stronger than ever. Therefore, Dell got rid of the nosecam at last.

The combination of a 4 K display and a power-hungry CPU, however, puts the battery life under 8 hours, which can damage mobile professionals. If you need more power, we suggest a 1080p model that lasted more than 12 hours on our battery check (a runtime that makes it one of the best college laptops). And if you want the next 2 in 1 XPS 13 that is the best2-in-1 laptop in the world, you can take it as a convertible laptop. The XPS 13 remains one of the best in its class in terms of design and performance.

I took the Dell XPS 13 $1,599 edition for a spin. And the goodies are ready, with a 1,8GHz Intel Core CPU i7-8565U with RAM 16 GB, a 1 TB PCIe SSD, and an Intel UHD 620 GPU GPU and a 4 K touch screen.

The new Dell XPS 13 2 in 1 laptop offers a 10th Gen Intel Core processor, which will be wider than its previous laptop, with even more slim design.

Dell XPS 13 (2019): A Detailed Review

The year 2019 is officially the year of Frost Silver and Arctic White. Dell has decided to shake things up with a new color scheme that is as appealing as the previous model, if not more so. The aluminum anodized is light gray in color, stopping just before the pearlescence and becoming as bright as the morning frost shortly before the rising sun. The Dell icon lies triumphantly in the middle of the cover as a lonely ornament.

The Arctic White finish on the sides of the machine, waiting inside the laptop, is shown. The interior deck retains a beautiful and solid glass fiber fabric from previous models. The pure white goes on, revealing the narrow borders of the bezel of InfinityEdge. Watch the bezel and find out that the webcam has moved back to its rightful center position (more on this later) from the underside of the bezel.

The new XPS 13 update is also available in Rose Gold if Frost isn’t your concern.

The 2.7-pound portal is a compact notebook of 11.9x 7.8x 0.3~0.5 inches. With a thickness of 0.6 inches, the 13-inch Apple MacBook Pro (at Touchbar), the Stealth Razer Blade and the Surface Laptop 2 look chunky in contrast. The MacBook Pro (3 pound), the MacBook Pro (2,9 pounds), and the Surface Laptop 2 are certainly heavier than the other 2.7 pounds.

Dell XPS 13 (2019): Webcam

The tiniest one. Camera.-Webcam. Yes, it’s the smallest webcam from Dell, really. In response to the XPS 13 webcam being derisively called the “nosecam” due to its place in the bottom bezel, Dell made its own webcam and moved it back to the top bezel.

The latest cam is just 0.08 centimeters, but it is still fine.

Dell XPS 13 (2019): Ports

The XPS 13 has not many ports, but with them, you can do so much.

The pair of Thunderbolt 3 ports on the left and the UBC Type-C port on the right are all capable of charging a notebook and can serve as a mini DisplayPort if you want to connect the device to a larger display.

It leaves a microSD card to the right for memory expansion and the headphone bug and wedge slot to the right to listen to music and keep your laptop safe.

Dell XPS 13 (2019): Display

Man, oh man, to that bezels! Failure to do this. Thanks to Dell’s InfinityEdge architecture, the charge continues to be mounted on the smallest possible bezels. The top bezel was only a bit thicker than usual, but you couldn’t really notice it.

But once you reach out to the display, you’ll forget about the thicker bezel. Once I looked at Samsara’s 4 K feature it created an amazing light. During the routine of the Balinese dancers, I was especially impressed by the deep blacks, rich golds, and vibrant reds. The images are also marvelously crisp, so I can see the deep cracks in the stone statues worn in times.

The dramatic color pops stem from the probability of the computer replicating 119 percent of SRGB, which correlates to the MacBook Pro and exceeds the typical laptop prime of 117 percent. Nevertheless, the optional XPS 13 FHD monitor (1080p) is 126% even more visible than the 120% Stealth, whereas the Surface Laptop 2 hits an impressive 176%.

The 4 K display on XPS 13 is rated 375 nits; it is very bright and outweighs both the average 318-nit and the 346 nits of the Stealth and the 321 nits of the Surface. The 1080p untouched camera on the XPS 13 is also luminous at 375 sleeves.

A pleasant surprise was the side-fired XPS 13 microphones. The laptop was able to fill my medium-sized hotel room with loud if sometimes crowded, audio. The room was filled with the singer’s nostalgic voice as she heard Janelle Monae’s “Can’t Live Without Your Love.” Even after fiddling with the Maxx Audio program, it overshadowed the rest of the album. Nonetheless, listening to New Edition’s “Can You Stand the Rain” received a better outcome like the “November Storm” by Guns N’ Roses.

Dell XPS 13 (2019): Keyboard and Touchpad

In particular, when backlighting is allowed, the XPS 13 keyboard cuts a striking figure in white. But the typing experience is more remarkable. Though I had just 1 mm of main travel (we’re usually looking for a minimum of 1.5 mm), I never thought that I would go down when I write. And the otherwise shallow keys had a nice bit of pop thanks to 63 grams of powder (60 g is our minimum accepted).

Nevertheless, on the 10 finger style test, I was just under my usual 70 words per minute, reaching just 65 wpm.

The 4.1 x 2,3-inch sensitive touchpad keeps pace with my web pages and pinch-zoom, two-finger scrolling and three-finger swipes.

The XPS 13 has just got a bourbon shot with a case. Use the laptop to stream Black Mirror: Bandersnatch from Netflix and open 25 other windows for Google Chrome running either a Twitch Stream or YouTube with the Core i7-8565U CPU and 16 GB of Ram. Armed with one of Intel’s newest whiskey lake processors. The XPS 13 was executed seamlessly and performed smoothly. But don’t expect to have the same level of performance as with the Core i3-8145U CPU and 4 GB of RAM model we tested.

In our simulated checks, the laptop kept its own and assessed the overall performance of 14 936 of Geekbench 4. That was enough to top the Surface Laptop 2 (Intel Core i5-8250U) with an average of 12,407 luxury laptops and 12,676. The Razer Blade Stealth, which has its own Core i7-8565U, reached 15.878, while the Gen Intel Core i7 CPU delivered 17.348 on the Macbook Pro and on the 8th. A paltry 6,825 scored in our XPS 13 base with the Core i3 CPU.

Excel Spreadsheet Macro Test

The XPS 13 took 1 minute and 10 seconds to combine the 65.000 names and address when we conducted the Excel Spreadsheet Macro Test and slipped beyond the average level 1:31. The laptops of Surface 2 and MacBook Pro were not far behind, respectively, at 1:15 and 1:16. Nonetheless, the Stealth blew away the competition and finished in 21 seconds.

Dell XPS 13 (2019): A Detailed Review

Needed to copy 4.97 GB of multimedia files on the 4 K XPS 13 1 TB PCIe SSD 9 seconds. This refers to a transfer rate of 565 megabytes per second, more than enough to overcome the average of 529.7-MBps. Unfortunately, the base model XPS 13, whose128 GB SSD file transferred at a slow speed of 154 MBps, can not be said the same thing. The 4 K XPS 13, at 254 and 203 MBps, was not touchable by either Stealth or Surface Laptop 2 with 512 GB PCIe M.2 NVMe SSDs. But the MacBook and the 256 GB SSD were 2.519 MBps from the competition.

Transcoding a 4K Video to 1080p

In 19 minutes and twenty seconds, the XPS 13, equipped with Core i7, was transcoding a 4 K video to 1080p. The total 21:54 and the Stealth’s 20:34 were enough to beat. However at 17:30 and 14:47 respectively, the Surface Laptop 2 and the MacBook Pro were quicker. It took 20 minutes 47 seconds for the XPS 13 with a Core i3 CPU.

No matter the power of whiskey lake, don’t expect to play games that tax graphics, such as Battlefield V or Destiny 2 with Intel 620 Graphics GPU XPS 13. The Core i7 notebook noted the Dirt 3 test at 88 frames per second, running at 1920x 1080p. This score has been higher than the average of 73 fps as well as the 47 and 82 fps MacBook Pro (Intel Iris PLUS 655) and Surface Laptop 2 (Intel UHD 620 Graphics GPU). Nevertheless, Stealth posted 164 fps with its discreet Nvidia GeForce MX 150 GPU. The XPS 13’s Core i3 variant was only 55 fps strong on the MacBook Pro.

Dell XPS 13  (2019): Battery Life

If you want the best power, we’d choose to have a full HD monitor on XPS 13 and ignore the 4 K screen.

Our 1080p model lasted for 12 hours and 22 minutes, and the Laptop Mag Battery Check (150 nights continuous web-based Wi-Fi surfing) lasted just 7 hours and 50 minutes. The UHD model has fallen below the average laptop premium 8:30. At 8:05, the Stealth made a bit better, while 8:43 and 9:22 respectively were on the MacBook Pro and SurfaceLaptop 2.

A laptop as slim as the XPS usually finds it difficult to stay cool. In counter this, Dell doubled the air intake and output in heat pipes and fans. In fact, the company added the same substance used on Mars Rover, GORE Thermal Isolation. The silica aerogels dissipate heat across the device, ensuring things are nice and comfortable.

Most of the time, the laptop lived up to the hype. We weighed laptop touchpad, keyboard center, and undercarriage after a full-screen HD video was running for 15 minutes. The XPS 13 in the three areas was 87, 96 and 95 Fahrenheit. Everything above 95 degrees considered outside our desired comfort limit. But for more than an hour, I have not been happy using the XPS 13 on my laptop.

Dell XPS 13 (2019): A Detailed Review

Dell XPS 13 (2019): Software and Warranty

Dell has already preloaded a number of useful applications and services to enhance the user experience. For example, a Dell Power Manager enables you to manage power consumption through preset profiles in order to extend battery life or squeeze out every bit of system performance.

If you want help with troubleshooting, Customer Support calls a Dell technician. In case of a machine reset or crash the Digital Delivery tracks all updates of your Applications and restores them. Mobile Connect also helps you to easily transfer photos, documents and videos from your smartphone to your laptop. Mobile apps such as Lyft, Uber, and Instagram are also available through your mobile.

Killer Control Center is available to control your network bandwidth. And you can get 20 GB of cloud storage for one year free with Dropbox when you’re low on bandwidth. Sadly, Microsoft has put a lot of bloatware on this slim laptop, including Netflix, Candy Crush Soda Saga, Cooking Fever and Asphalt Street Storm to name just a few.

The Dell XPS 13 (2019) has already been a really strong laptop and Dell has effectively improved to be our favorite overall super-portable. The addition of Intel Whiskey Lake cements the mobile powerhouse status of XPS 13. And this vivid 4 K view is the best place to watch a video when you don’t crunch the numbers. We like the itty-bitty webcam particularly and we always kill our nosecam.

Although it could boost the battery life in the 4 K model, the Dell XPS 13 remains the first option.
