Asus Chromebook Flip C434: Full Review

The Asus Chromebook Flip C434 is a 2-in-1 laptop with a premium build, a bright 1080p screen, and an all-day battery life.

Sleek & Premium

Our favorite Chromebook convertible just got a little better. The latest Asus Chromebook Flip C434 is a big improvement on its excellent predecessor. Asus Chromebook Flip C302CA, with its bigger screen, longer battery cycles, and better output.

In addition, the Chromedoc Flip C434 has a lightweight aluminum frame with a 14-inch display both bright and vibrant.

Not only this, but the Chromebook Flip C434 is literally also one of the best laptops in its price range, including Chromebook.

Design

One of Asus’s luxury Zenbook Ultrabooks could easily make by mistake, the Chromebook Flip C434. I can not think of another laptop in this price range which looks just as elegant as the Flip C434 when I see its matte-silver aluminum finish with Chrome cut.

First of all, the bezels that surround the computer when you open the laptop are barely there. We’ve seen that before, but the Flip C434 is one of the compactest 14-inch laptops we reviewed with an 87% screen-to-body ratio.

On the inside of the Flip C434, you’ll find a silver keyboard and chrome trim outlining the panel, the touchpad, the volume, the power buttons, and the hinges. The layout of the C434 will not blast you but at least the standard silver/chrome theme will differentiate itself from the look of the MacBook.

The C434 is able to “flip” 360° into a tablet or tent mode. Interestingly, the two robust Chrom hinges of the laptop are locked in place at 180 °. From there, the display turns back to complete transition to tablet mode.

The Chromebook Flip C424 is slim and lightweight, especially when you consider the size of your device display. With 12.6 x 8x 0.6 inches and 3.1 pounds,2-in-1 is as compact as 12.3-inch (2.4 pounds) and 12.5-inch Asus flip C302CA (0.6 inch, 2.6 pounds) as Samsung’s Chromebook Pro. The 12.3-inch Chromebook x2 is about as wide as Flip C434 (0.6 cm, 3.1 pounds).

Durability Test

11 popular Chromebooks have been dropped to see which are the most durable. Sadly, Asus ‘ Chromebook Flip C434 was dead for the last time in our Chromebook drop test. The laptop suffered serious damage to its aluminum chassis, the touchpad buttons split, and the glass shattered (which resulted in a patch of dead pixels) when we dropped the laptop from 2.5 feet and 4.5 feet to the carpet and concrete. Of course, if you give it to a kid, you’re not going to drop the Flip C434 and pay extra attention.

Ports

There’s not much space for ports on the superthin chassis of the Chromebook C434, but it still provides all the essentials.

It includes a USB 3.1 Type-A port, a USB-C port, and a headphone jack on the left side of the case, along with a second USB-C port and a MicroSD slot on the right.

Both USB-C ports support charging so that you can connect the Flip C434 from both sides.

Display

My eyes were drawn to the 14-inch 1080p touch screen of the Flip C434, a fairly bright, if not ground-breaking screen with such slim bezel on the very device.

Both USB-C ports support the charge, so you are able to plug in the Flip C434 from either side.

Based upon the colorimeter, the 14-inch monitor occupies 93% of the sRGB color gamut. The Chromebook x2 (114%) and Chromebook Pro (118%) have more vivid displays, but the screen of Chromebook Flip C434 is more vibrant than the previous Chromebook Clip 302CA (76%) is more vibrant, and Chromebook averages (83%).

The monitor of the Flip C434 is equally lighted in the center of the case. With a peak rating of 286 nits, the Flip 434 screen is brighter than the typical Chromebook (235 nits); however, the screens on the Chromebook Pro (376 nits), the Chromebook x2 (403 nits) and the Flip C302CA (292 nits) are darker.

Keyboard and Touchpad

The island-style, backlit keyboard on the Flip C434 offers a solid typing experience, despite providing just 1.3 millimeters of key travel (our preference is from 1.5 to 2mm).

The keys are large and nicely spaced, and they have 71 grams of actuation force (up from a measly 49 grams on the Flip 302CA), which gives them a tactile click. I prefer a slightly lower actuation force since the keys felt sticky to my fingers, but that’s a matter of preference.

In chrome, the Flip C434 touchpad of 4.1 x 2.4-inch was sometimes very jumpy but quickly responded to my strokes and taps as I surfed the website. I didn’t have any trouble with Chrome OS gestures, such as pinch-to-zoom and two-finger swipes to move between the pages.

Audio

On the front of the Flip C434, the bottom-firing speakers deliver a clear sound that is strong enough to fill a wide area. I tapped my foot along to the lively rhythm that the speakers brought to the “Pools” of Glass Animals. The low-frequency bass tones were a bit weak, but the voices were strong, and I could hear each of the instruments clearly, even in the noisy chorus.

In the Sampha piano-driven ballad “(No one knows me) Like the piano,” which sounded distorted, the speakers had some trouble using piano chords. This is a shame, as the blinding noise in Sampha’s sensitive falsetto, otherwise, marred excellent sound quality.

Performance

Our Chromebook Flip C434 review unit, fitted with an Intel Core m3-8100Y CPU and 4 GB of RAM, had enough oomph that I could quickly search the web while running simple tasks. I quickly loaded 18 Chrome tabs and saw a 1080p clip of Israel’s failed moon landscape while the backdrop played with three other high-definition images. When I switched between tabs, I found a little bit lagging, but overall Chromebook Flip C434 did a great job.

Our 2 in-1 studies have yielded mixed results. The Flip C434 ranked average Chromebook category (4.380,000) and beat the Chromebook x 2 (6.637), rated at Geekbench 4 with a score of 6.968.

Chrome OS and Android Apps

Google’s operating system has matured like fine wine over the last few years, turning it from K-12 OS into a viable alternative to Windows 10 and macOS for everyday users. The main catalyst was the launch of support for Android apps, which allows users to download their favorite mobile apps on their computers.

The implementation has not been perfect— some apps do not scale well on larger, higher-resolution displays. But their inclusion gives Chrome OS a wider appeal, especially among younger generations who have grown up using Google services on their smartphones. While its features have improved, the Chrome operating system remains a lightweight, easy-to-use, Google Chrome-based operating system.

Battery Life

The Flip C434 extends the already respectable runtime of its predecessors by more than an hour (8:52), which lasted for 9 and 58 minutes during our Laptop Mag battery check. The Chromebook Pro is longer (8:05) and the Chromebook is x2 (8:50). The rating of the Chromebook Pro is high (9:02).

Webcam

Somehow Asus placed a webcam on top of the C434 monitor on the thin shoulder. The camera of 720p, which only captures an average image, therefore still beats the tail out of any camera head.

Heat

The Chromebook Flip C434 stayed cool during our heat check, which involves playing a 15-minute full-screen video. The touchpad held comfortable 83 ° F, while the middle of the keyboard (87 ° F ) and the low panel (92 ° F) were also below the 95 ° F comfort threshold. Only the bottom-left corner (99 degrees) has warmed up.

Warranty and Support

Asus has a one-year warranty on the Chromebook Flip C434.

Conclusion

My new favorite Chromebook is the Chromebook C434 Flip. The2-in-1 laptop builds on its already excellent predecessor by providing a bigger, 14-inch monitor in a similarly sized aluminum chassis. The Flip C434 has powerful speakers and a fairly brilliant 1080p screen and is charged for almost 10 hours.

But it is not ideal for a laptop. At $569, the Flip C434’s pricey side for a Chromebook is, and our performance tests have produced mixed results. Nevertheless, the Chromebook Flip C434 is a 2-in-1 standout, providing a strong incentive for Mac and Windows users to turn to Chrome.

If you want a detachable and have some space in your budget, go with the $599 HP Chromebook x2, a 12.3-inch hybrid notebook with a bright display, a long battery life, and a comfortable detachable keyboard. The Samsung Chromebook 3 could become a laptop to you if you want to save money. While the Chromebook 3 is not as good as the Flip C434, its long battery life and bright display make this $179 a steal.

Overall, the Chromebook Flip C434 is an excellent 2-in-1 laptop and the device I would recommend to anyone making the switch to Chrome OS.
