Acer Swift 7 (2019): Full Review

The incredibly thin Swift 7 from Acer is an excellent laptop, even though portability has cut corners.

The extremes are defined by Acer. Acer has crossed the limits of laptop design in every way between the lightweight swift 5 and the gigantic Predator Helios 700. Now the laptop we fell in love with last year’s improvement: the Swift 7. Like its predecessors, the Swift 7 this year has a very small chassis that you’re going to want to show to all your friends. This attractive laptop also offers a beautiful 14 “display and surprisingly long battery life, even as portability is the highlight of the Swift 7.

As intended, compromises were made in such a slim chassis with the greatest deception being the sheer results, the poor speakers and the floppy webcam.

Acer Swift 7 price

Acer offers several different Swift 7 models.

Our $1,699 (black) base is equipped with an i7-8500Y Intel Core, a RAM 16 GB and a storage of 512 GB. It costs $50 more for a white version.

The $1899 version of the Swift 7, the same specifications plus upgrade from Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro could also be required by business users. Nonetheless, we suggest you save some money by yourself.

Acer Swift 7 design

Manufacturers have used to boast of a similar size of their laptops to a traditional notebook. In comparison with the sheets of paper, Acer is better off.

But this actually is “you have to see it to believe it.” The best I can do is compare Swift 7’s thickness with other ultra-portable portable laptops. I have to do it all the way around and then I can do it.

Dimensions

Swift 7 is at 0.4 inches and 1.9 pounds significantly thinner and lighter than the Apple MacBook Air (0.7 inches, 2.5 pounds) and Asus ZenBook 14 UX 433 (0.6 inches and 2.6 pounds).

A finer contrast can be made between the Swift 7 and an advanced handset, both 0.3 inch thick with the new Google Pixel 4XL and the Apple iPhone 11 Pro. Fill those cellphones with a nice case and maybe even over Swift 7.

It’s also super-compact, it’s not only thin, Swift 7. The nearly bezel-less monitor gives the laptop a 92 percent screen to body ratio.

Over and above these absurd dimensions, Swift 7 has a real aesthetic, not too many. The lid of the laptop has a simple Acer logo of gold chrome, which is on the deck.

Inside the laptop, you will find a power button that doubles like a fingerprint sensor and a pop-up webcam. Swift 7 has the kind of sophistication that a luxury car blends with a swooping curve close to the ports.

Our type of black is special in the color that depends on how the light reaches it from chocolate to red. It looks great, but you can use the white version if fingerprints help you.

Acer promises that the “micro-arc oxidation” on a laptop’s deck will prevent scratches because magnesium alloy tends to be more characteristic than aluminum in our experience.

Acer Swift 7 Ports

Dual Thunderbolt 3 ports are all on this slim laptop to the right of the Swift 7.

You can at least load a laptop and a device at the same time which you could not do with the 12-inch MacBook, which has been retired by Apple.

Acer Swift 7 Display

I liked the app on a 14-inch, 1080p touchscreen display of Swift 7 to watch videos and surf the web. Thin bezels led my eyes to the stand, which greeted me with fairly bright colors.

On watching a Jumanji trailer: the next moment, Kevin Hart was standing against a lush green jungle in his saturated red neck pair. The details of the screen have captured me enough to see the individual white hair strands in Danny DeVito’s barb and the wretched fangs from an angry mandril with natural blue and red tones. My experience was only ruined by the office lights that mirrored on the glass panel of the Swift 7.

I considered a very sensitive Swift 7 touch screen. Because of my torment with the touchpad of the laptop (see below), I was very glad to use the touch-screen as my first method.

The Swift 7 color display, according to our colorimeter, covers 105% of the color range of sRGB, which makes it less sharp than the Gram 142-in-1 panels (128%), ZenBook 14 UX433 (121%) and Premium Laptop Average (130%) but colorful than the Apple MacBook Air screen (100%).

On the other hand, the display of Swift 7 reached 293 nits, which is more bright than the Gram 14 2-in-1 panels and the ZenBook 14 (217 nits), which is however more dim than the display of the MacBook Air (343 nits).

Acer Swift 7 Performance

Acer fitted the Swift 7 with a powerful CPU Y-series to support such a small design. The Intel Core i7–8500Y in particular.

I anticipated the Swift 7 would slow down in my real-world tests, because of its low-power chip, but the laptop chugged without any whimper. I have noticed some brief skips as animations loaded on a big web page, but else, even with 15 Google Chrome tabs open and 4 1080p videos streamed running behind me, it wasn’t a problem to browse the web. Having said that, don’t expect the Swift 7 to work with you like larger laptops that carry U-series or H-series processors.

The Swift 7 scored 6.374 in the Geekbench 4.3 overall performance test, which is less than half of what the Gram 142-in-1 (15.943, Core i7-8565U) and the average premium laptop (15.581) achieved. ZenBook 14 (11,804, Core i7-8565U), and also the 7,880, Corea i5-8210Y, drop behind MacBook Air.

In the time it took Swift 7 to transcode 4 K video in 1080p resolution using the Handbrake app, you can see a complete Breaking Bad season. The work required 50 minutes and 22 seconds for the laptop was twice as high as that for Gram 142-in-1 (21:17) and ZenBook 14 UX433 and the premium average for the laptop (22:25).

Acer Swift 7 Audio

Regardless of whether you are using a pair of headphones or attaching computer speakers, do yourself a favor, and don’t use the integrated speaker of Swift 7 as your main means. The static, shrill speakers on the laptop mimic the intercom in an old New York City metro.

Acer Swift 7 Keyboard and Touchpad

I had some difficulties typing this analysis on the backlit keyboard of the Swift 7. I don’t care how the keys feel, actually. Sure, it’s extremely shallow and I get back to the bottom of the key frequently, but the keys are well-spaced, clicky and have that wonderful “snap” sound.

Instead of the history key next to them, my fingers have repeatedly hit the delete key. I don’t have so much trouble if those keys alone were reversed. Also, I did not have to keep the Fn and the up file to add volume to my monitor and use Fn+E to expand it to a phone. Worst of all, no mute shortcut is available.

10fastfingers.com Typing Test

On a 10fastfingers.com, I typed at 126 words a minute with a 98% accuracy rate. Those are some of the best results I have ever achieved and have greatly improved my 95% accuracy average over my 119-wpm.

The old Swift 7 was a nightmare to use as there were no buttons or haptic feedback on its touchpad. The updated 5.5x 2-inch touchpad is now a move ahead compared with the original version, with the buttons left-and right-click.

Occasionally, the surface even saved a two-finger scroll rather than a pinch-to-zoom gesture when I tried to take the Windows 10 touchpad.

Acer Swift 7 Graphics

On Swift 7, you may forget the best PC games. The integrated Intel UHD 615 graphics together with Intel Y series chips can not go much further than playing online games and loading web or video animation.

By playing Dirt 3, the Swift 7 showed itself at a rate of 18 frames a second, well below the threshold of 30-fps and far behind what the Gram 142-in-1 (51 fps), the ZenBook 14UX-433 (45 fps) and the average premium laptop (61 fps) had.

Swift 7 ended up with 49.402, which is approximately half the score of Gram 142-in-1 (87.220), ZenBook 14 (87.446) and the premium Laptop average (90.663), on the 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited check.

Acer Swift 7 Battery Life

(8:15), if only by a few minutes. That said, other ultraportable laptops, like the Gram 14 2-in-1 (11:28), have more endurance.

Acer Swift 7 Webcam

Where can I begin? Personally, if only to save some bucks I wanted Acer to quit the webcam altogether. Acer opted instead to insert the webcam into the keyboard deck above and on the left side. This resulted in my fingers being grabbed by the camera as I was typing and my chest being pulled away.

Acer Swift 7 Heat

The low energy CPU of the Swift 7 Y series would make a thin design without a fan, but it doesn’t seem like Intel thought that anyone would go that thin.

We played a 1080p YouTube video for 15 minutes to see how cool the Swift 7 was. While the touchpad warmed up to 85 ° F and the lows stood at 98 ° C, the top of the deck (just above the keyboard) reached 108 ° C.

During everyday use, the heat was noticeable. I removed my fingers from the laptop deck several times as I watched on the internet or downloaded videos because of how hot the Swift 7 came.

Acer Swift 7 Software and Warranty

I want Acer not to include on its laptops so many pre-installed apps. Stacked above the usual Windows 10 Home suspects are over half a dozen Acer and third-party apps.

The Care Center is one of those that you want to preserve. You can view information about your device, scan for firmware-updates, test your components on your laptop and make recovery backups at the main hub interface of this program. Many Acer applications only guide you to legal documents and a user manual.

A few of the Windows 10 home applications are available on Swift 7, including Bubble Witch 3 Saga, Candy Crush Friends, Amazon, Booking, Evernote and Hearts Deluxe, which should be much shorter on a premium laptop. Only a few apps have been added.

Conclusion

It’s a robust notebook with a beautiful screen, premium design, and an amazingly long lifetime. But don’t let me trick you, because the razor-thin chassis is absolutely not a single portable laptop, it is the reason you should purchase the Swift 7.

Remove its thinness and Swift 7 loses a great deal of its appeal. Acer had to make some sacrifices, including the kit of the Swift 7 with a feeble processor, an uncomfortable keyboard and a touchpad, and a practically useless webcam. The Swift 7 is therefore behind our favorite laptops.
